An Easy To Read List of Bucky Fuller’s Principles For
Making The World Work for 100% Of Humanity.

—

Most people see that not everything works well in the world and I am often asked: “what can I do about it?”

Comprehensive thinker Bucky Fuller’s drive was to “make the world work for 100% of humanity”; Taking inspiration from an article (The Anticipatory Leader: Buckminster Fuller’s Principles for Making the World Work for 100% of humanity) published in 2006 in The Futurist & written by Medard Gabel & Jim Walker, I have compiled and summarized an easy to read list of Bucky’s leadership principles. This list gathers in one place some of the most important aspects of Bucky Fuller’s thinking and reflections about what a single, seemingly powerless individual can do, and how he or she can get started, to change the course of events humans have unwillingly set unto themselves.

Think comprehensively, act locally:

Identify the most important thing to do at this extraordinary moment, and do it.

Zoom out: “spy” the most remote fundamental cause that needs to be changed or revolutionalized. (You can “dig deeper” with the following posts studied previously by The Bucky Call: Start with the Universe, and also this one: Scenario Universe.)

Change the environment, not the people; that is respect & trust the individual and his decisions.

Anticipate the future:

Tune in on trends – Technological, world resources, human needs – Tune out the noise.

Respect LAG & gestation times, understand the second derivative of speed: accelerating acceleration.

Focus on a vision of what the world should be like; everyone’s basic needs, eternally regenerative, safe from war and social injustice.

Be a “trim tab”, an individual that can initiate big change.

Design and build artifacts that will change the environment and alter Man's behavior and habits

Be a trim tab, leverage, do more with less. Have faith in the individual’s ability to build artifacts, tools and creative responses that “will move the rudder”.

Know where the ship is, where it is heading, currents, winds, tides; where the ship ought to be going; when and where to apply pressure.

Take individual initiative:

See what needs to be done that nobody else is attending to.

Anti “Big Man”, anti central planning or authority; we all should be leaders, at least of our own lives.

Ask the obvious and naive questions:

Ask simple and naive questions to initiate change. Why do we do things this way? —we always did it that way!

With our expanding technical resources, why can’t we commit to feed, clothe and shelter all passengers aboard spaceship earth?

Why don’t we simply look at how nature builds things, and then build our own structures accordingly?

Do more with less:

What is wealth? money is not wealth; capital is seeking true productive wealth; wealth that knows how to do more and more with less and less.

Create more output with less input, gain influence.

True wealth = resources + know how applied to needs.

We can only learn more, never less – as knowledge & understanding grows, so does wealth.

The zero sum game of commodities is scarcity; human creation & ingenuity to do more with less creates abundance. (If you want more information about Malthus and Malthusian Principles, I invite you to read The Bucky Call Darwin Anniversary Special study materials that you can find at: Natural Selection and the Malthusian Principle or Competition for Limited Resources).

Live off our daily sun generated energy income, not by spending off our balance sheet energy savings (fossil fuels). Understand “cosmic cost accounting”. Measure actual human gains, not financial statements.

Money is a tool for making artifacts that will make the world work for 100% of humanity.

Seek to reform the environment, not man:

Change the environment, leverage in infrastructure, not in habit ridden man.

Reforming the environment will have a large impact on human behavior.

Thank you Dear Reader for reading this far; I kept the last principle of this “Bucky Bucket” list for you, it is now your turn and a “not to be wasted” opportunity for you to:

Solve problems through action:

-Richard Buckminster (Bucky) Fuller.

What do you see that needs to be done that nobody else is attending to?

What do you need to learn to be effective in attending to it in a highly efficient and inoffensive-to-others manner?

What problem solving action are you willing to take?

Each age is characterized by its own astronomical myriads of new, special-case experiences and problems to be stored in freshly born optimum capacity human brains-which storages in turn may disclose to human minds the presence of here to fore undiscovered, unsuspectedly existent eternal generalized principles.

We are in an age that assumes the narrowing trends of specialization to be logical, natural, and desirable. Consequently, society expects all earnestly responsible communication to be crisply brief. Advancing science has now discovered that all the known cases of biological extinction have been caused by overspecialization, whose concentration of only selected genes sacrifices general adaptability. Thus the specialist’s brief for pinpointing brevity is dubious. In the meantime, humanity has been deprived of comprehensive understanding. Specialization has bred feelings of isolation, futility, and confusion in individuals. It has also resulted in the individual’s leaving responsibility for thinking and social action to others. Specialization breeds biases that ultimately aggregate as international and ideological discord, which, in turn, leads to war.

The human brain is a physical mechanism for storing, retrieving, and re-storing again, each special-case experience. The experience is often a packaged concept. Such packages consist of complexedly interrelated and not as-yet differentially analyzed phenomena which, as initially unit cognitions, are potentially reexperienceable. A rose, for instance, grows. has thorns, blossoms, and fragrance, but often is stored in the brain only under the single word-rose.

As Korzybski, the founder of general semantics, pointed out, the consequence of its single-tagging is that the rose becomes reflexively considered by man only as a red, white, or pink device for paying tribute to a beautiful girl, a thoughtful hostess, or last night’s deceased acquaintance. The tagging of the complex biological process under the single title rose tends to detour human curiosity from further differentiation of its integral organic operations as well as from consideration of its interecological functionings aboard our planet. We don’t know what a rose is, nor what may be its essential and unique cosmic function. Thus for long have we inadvertently deferred potential discovery of the essential roles in Universe that are performed complementarily by many, if not most, of the phenomena we experience. But, goaded by youth, we older ones are now taking second looks at almost everything. And that promises many ultimately favorable surprises. The oldsters do have vast experience banks not available to the youth. Their memory banks, integrated and reviewed, may readily disclose generalized principles of eminent importance. The word generalization in literature usually means covering too much territory too thinly to be persuasive, let alone convincing. In science, however, a generalization means a principle that has been found to hold true in every special case. The principle of leverage is a scientific generalization. It makes no difference of what material either the fulcrum or the lever consists-wood, steel, or reinforced concrete. Nor do the special-case sizes of the lever and fulcrum, or of the load pried at one end, or the work applied at the lever’s other end in any way alter either the principle or the mathematical regularity of the ratios of physical work advantage that are provided at progressive fulcrum-to-load increments of distance outward from the fulcrum in the opposite direction along the lever’s arm at which theoperating effort is applied. Mind is the weightless and uniquely human faculty that surveys the ever larger inventory of special-case experiences stored in the brain bank and, seeking to identify their intercomplementary significance, from time to time discovers one of the rare scientifically generalizable principles running consistently through all the relevant experience set. The thoughts that discover these principles are weightless and tentative and may also be eternal. They suggest eternity but do not prove it, even though there have been no experiences thus far that imply exceptions to their persistence. It seems also to follow that the more experiences we have, the more chances there are that the mind may discover, on the one hand, additional generalized principles or, on the other hand, exceptions that disqualify one or another of the already catalogued principles that, having heretofore held “true” without contradiction for a long time, had been tentatively conceded to be demonstrating eternal persistence of behavior. Mind’s relentless reviewing of the comprehensive brain bank’s storage of all our special-case experiences tends both to progressive enlargement and definitive refinement of the catalogue of generalized principles that interaccommodatively govern all transactions of Universe. It follows that the more specialized society becomes, the less attention does it pay to the discoveries of the mind, which are intuitively beamed toward the brain, there to be received only if the switches are “on.” Specialization tends to shut off the wide-band tuning searches and thus to preclude further discovery of the allpowerful generalized principles. Again we see how society’s perverse fixation on specialization leads to its extinction.

The Task:

Pick and go to any supermarket or shopping centre and record all the ins, outs, betweens and arounds the event called super market or shopping center. What is being said without saying anything and where did it come from?

Non Simultaneous In, Out, Around, And In-Between

Simultaneously: existing, occurring, or operating at the same time; concurrent: simultaneous movements

Non - simultaneity : not existing, occurring, or operating at the same time; concurrent: simultaneous movements

Synchronously: in synchrony; in a synchronous manner; “in four-chambered hearts, the two auricles move synchronously”

No generalized principles have ever been discovered that contradict other generalized principles. All the generalized principles are interaccommodative. Some of them are synchronously interaccommodative; that is, some of them accommodate the other by synchronized nonsimultaneity. Many of them are interaccommodative simultaneously.

Because of the fundamental nonsimultaneity of universal structuring, a single, simultaneous, static model of Universe is inherently both nonexistent and conceptually impossible as well as unnecessary. Ergo, Universe does not have a shape. Do not waste your time, as man has been doing for ages, trying to think of a unit shape “outside of which there must be something,” or “within which, at center, there must be a smaller something.”

Universe is finite because it is the sum total of finitely furnished experiences. The comprehensive set of all experiences synergetically constituting Universe discloses an astronomically numbered variety of subset event-frequency rates and their respective rates of conceptual tunability comprehension. It takes entirely different lengths of time to remember to “look up” different names or facts of past events.

Local life in Universe involves the invention of time. Time involves nonsimultaneity and limited information__ergo, only partial equatability. By introducing time and the myriad differential of interevent lags consequent to the exponentially multiplying, reinterpositioning distance variables inherent in the six alternative moves for each of the myriad of differentially frequenced, neversimultaneous events, the exponentially multiplying complexity of interevent lags accounts for both the micronuclear and macroastronomical progressive range of distance differentials of experience-limited, local-Universe human observing. Since each of the only-mathematically-statable, scientifically generalized laws of physical Universe constitutes a statement of truth, and since science has discovered a plurality of observable and ever redemonstrably operative truths all of which are always omniinteraccommodative__it may be said that truth is complex.

Thought discovers that we divide Universe into an “outwardness and inwardness,” so thinking is the first subdivision of Universe, because Universe, we discovered, was finite. Thinking is a nonsimultaneously recallable aggregate of inherently finite experiences and finite experience furniture such as photons of light. One of the most important observations about our thought is the discovery that experiences are nonsimultaneous. Nonsimultaneity is a fundamental characteristic, and if experiences are nonsimultaneous, you cannot have simultaneous reconsideration.

All the words of all the vocabularies could be said to represent all the formalized attempts of men to communicate all their experiences. So we could set out to examine all the dictionaries of the world. We can pick up any one dictionary and discover that it is a nice finite package. We can open one page, but we cannot look at all the words at once. If we cannot look at all the words even on one page, we certainly cannot look at all the words of a whole dictionary at once. It does not make the dictionary infinite because we cannot look at all the words at once or think about all the words at once. The inability to think about everything at once does not mean that experience or consideration of experience is infinite. It is perplexing that one of the most persistent contemplations of human beings has been predicated on a static concept of Universe, the kind of Universe that went out with classical Newtonian mechanics. We cannot think of Universe as a fixed, static picture, which we try to do when people ask where the outwardness of Universe ends. Humans try to get a finite unit package. We have a monological propensity for the thing, the key, the building block of Universe. What we discover here is that it is not possible to think about all Universe at once. It nonsimultaneously conceptual. This in no way mitigates against its finiteness and thinkableness.

The parents tell the child he cannot have both the Sun and the Moon in the picture at the same time. The child says that you can. The child has the ability to coordinate nonsimultaneity. The parents have lost the ability to coordinate nonsimultaneity. One of our great limitations is our tendency to look only at the static picture, the one confrontation. We want one-picture answers; we want key pictures. But we are now discovering that they are not available.

We can think about all the experiences progressively and successively. And we can coordinate our thoughts about our experiences. Our very ability to think is such a propensity for the coordination of the reconsiderations of relationships. We do not have to be simultaneous to be interconnected. We can telephone across the international date line from Sunday back to Saturday.

We have had a tendency in our thinking to say that what is finite is statically conceptual as a one-unit glimpse, so we have been seemingly frustrated in trying to understand Universe, which is an omnidirectional experience, and so we feel there ought to be an outwardness of this sphere. That is a static concept. We are not dealing with such a sphere at all, because we have all these nonsimultaneous reports, and all we have is the interconnectedness of the nonsimultaneity. One of Einstein’s most intellectual discoveries was this nonsimultaneity, which he apparently could have come upon by virtue of his experience in examining the thoughts of inventors and their patent claims regarding timekeeping devices, watches, and clocks. The speed-of-light measurements plus Planck’s quantum mechanics and Einstein’s relativity showed that Universe is an aggregate of nonsimultaneous events. Their experiments showed that as each of the nonsimultaneous events lost their energy, they lost it to newly occurring events. Thus energy always became 100 percent accounted for.

6. Measurable levels of improvement less materials, ergs of energy, second of time

7. The big question remained: How do you obtain the money to live with and to acquire the materials and tools with which to work?

The Answer: Precession

Half-Century experience also discovered the natural, unacceleratable lags exsisting between inventions and industrial uses in various technical categories, which occur as follows:

Electronics 2 years

Aerodynamics 5 years

Automobiles 10 years

Rail Roads 15 years

Lags have consistenly characterized the lenghts of gestation periods

Gestation Rates In Days and by Species:

1. 120.00 Mass Interattraction

120.01 Synergy is disclosed by the interattraction for one another of two or more separate objects. But any two masses will demonstrate that halving the distance between them will fourfold their attraction for each other. (Which is the way Newton might have said it, but did not.) He discovered the mathematical gain in attraction, but he stated it “inversely,” which is awkward and nonspontaneously illuminating. The inverseness led him to speak in terms of progressive diminution of the attraction: as the distance away was multiplied by two, the attraction diminished by four; ergo, he could speak of it as “squared.” The attraction of one mass for the other increases as the second power of the rate of increase of their proximity to one another: halve the distance and the interaction is fourfolded.

121.00 Our senses are easily deceived because mass interattraction is not explained and cannot be predicted by any characteristic of any one massive body considered alone. Local observation of mass attraction is also obscured by the overwhelming presence of Earth’s gravity. For instance, two 12-inch-in-diameter spheres of so dense a material as ivory do not appear to attract each other until they are only about a paper-thin distance apart. The thickness of a paper match superimposed on a 12-inch globe represents the point at which a rocket precesses into orbit, going from its 180-degree tendency to fall into its 90-degree orbital independence as an astronomical entity. This is the critical- behavior point at which it becomes an independent entity in Universe, a satellite. Small Earth satellites orbit at an altitude of only about 100 miles, which is only about 1/80th of the diameter of the Earth. This critical proximity event of transition from 180-degree to 90-degree independence is called precession. Mass attraction is also involved in precession, another member of the family of generalized principles. But scientists still have not the slightest idea why mass attraction occurs; they only know that it does. They do not know why. This requires admission of an utter a priori mystery within which the masses demonstrate their utterly mysterious attraction for one another. It appears that no single part of the Universe can predict the behavior of the whole. As we attain greater experience and opportunity to observe the synergetic effects of Universe, there is always a greater discernment of generalized principles. The discovery of a plurality of generalized principles permits the discovery of the synergetic effect of their complex interactions.

130.00 Precession and Entropy

130.01 Critical proximity occurs where there is angular transition from “falling back in” at 180-degree to 90-degree orbiting__which is precession. (Gravity may be described as “falling back in” at 180 degrees.) The quantity of energy that ceased to “fall in” is the system’s entropy. Critical proximity is when it starts either “falling in” or going into orbit, which is the point where either entropy or antientropy begins.

131.00 An aggregate of “falling ins” is a body. What we call an object or an entity is always an aggregate of interattracted entities; it is never a solid. And the critical proximity transition from being an aggregate entity to being a plurality of separate entities is precession, which is a “peeling off” into orbit rather than falling back in to the original entity aggregate. This explains entropy intimately. It also explains intimately the apparent energy losses in chemical transformations, associations, disassociations and high-order element disintegration into a plurality of lower-order elements__and nothing is lost. Entity has become invisible. The switch is precessional.

132.00 The unprotected far side of the Moon has more craters of the “fallen-in” asteroids. Ergo, the far side weighs more than the near side, which is shielded by the Earth. The additional far-side weight of the Moon acts centrifugally to keep the weighted side always away from the Earth around which it orbits. Ergo, there is always one side, the same side, facing us. The Moon is always oriented toward us, like a ship that has its masts pointed inwardly toward us and its weighted keel away from us. This explains why the first photographs showed a greater number of craters on the far side of the Moon. The Earth acts as a shield. On Earth, the craters are not so concentrated because the Earth gets its cosmic fallout quite evenly. Earth’s weight and massive pull are progressively increased to offset the Moon’s farside weight increase and tendency otherwise to forsake Earth.

133.00 “Solids” are simply the fraternities of the “fallen-into-one-anothers.”

The call will be about the first 20 page of chapter 1 of Critical path and the following.

Talk then

Kelly

Neither the set of all experiences, nor the set of all words that describe them, nor the set of all the generalized conceptual principles harvested from the total of experiences is either instantly or simultaneously reviewable. “What was that man’s name?” Our answering service may take five seconds, five hours, five days, or five generations to reply. Our conscious, orderly reconsideration of our variable-lag experiences discloses subconsciously coordinated regularities of feedback rates governing the recall phenomena.

What we do when we think is to dismiss momentarily all the irrelevant thoughts as we would part the grass to right and left in order to find a path.

Thinking is high-frequency interception and very temporary diversion to a local holding pattern outside our consideration of all the irrelevant inbound Feedback just as inbound airplanes are “stacked up” in the sky near airports by the ground control when too many come in at about the same time and may interfere with each discretely safe landing operation. Landing is a slowing operation and an exact timing operation. Having isolated a finite set of experiences spontaneously grouped for comprehensive consideration by dismissing the irrelevancies, we may proceed to comprehend or “land” the isolated system by applying the theory of bits, which breaks up finite wholes into finite parts.

We may now say that what we do in thinking, after deliberately excluding the irrelevancies and thereby inadvertently isolating the considered set, is to further subdivide Universe into four parts:

1. All of the parts of Universe that are externally irrelevant because too large and too infrequent;

2. All the events of Universe that are internally irrelevant because too small and too frequent to be resolvable and discretely differentiated out for inclusion in our interrelationship considerations;

3. All of the lucidly relevant remainder of Universe, which constitutes the considered and reconsidered set of experiences as viewed from outside the set; and

4. The lucidly relevant set as viewed from inside the set.

Part 1 is the un-tuned, macrocosmic, long-wavelength, low-frequency, high-energy set.

Part 2 is the un-tuned, microcosmic, short-wavelength, high-frequency, low energy set.

Parts 3 and 4 are the tuned, plus (+) and minus (-), interface sets.

The thinking process results in varying degrees of lucidity of the arrayed residue of focal-event patterns uniquely consequent to the disciplined deferment of irrelevancies. Thinking is a putting-aside, rather than a putting-in, discipline.

Thinking is FM frequency modulation for it results in the tuning out of irrelevancies (static) as a result of definitive resolution of the exclusively tuned-in or accepted feedback messages’ pattern differentiability. And as the exploring navigator picks his channel between the look-out-detected rocks, the intellect picks its way between irrelevancies of feedback messages. Static and irrelevancies are the same.

There are two inherent twilight zones of “tantalizingly almost-relevant recollections” spontaneously fed back in contiguous frequency bands: the macro-twilight and the micro-twilight. They inherently subdivide all Universe into the two unique extremes of macro- and micro-frequencies.

So I find that you and I and the lamppost and its lamp are basic subdivisions of Universe. You and I and complex it are either all of the Universe that is inside, all of the Universe that is outside, or all the remaining Universe, which comprises a given recognizable system or set. The residual constellation to be reconsidered constitutes a local conceptual system.

You cannot program the unknowns you are looking for because they are the relationship connections and not the things. The only thing you can program is the dismissal of irrelevancies.

When we say “we think,” our feedback has variable lags that may take overnight or months of time, for all we know. Because we want to understand that is, to know the interrelationships of clusters of experiences our first great discovery is dismissing irrelevancies, the macro-micro characteristics.

Add: forgotten questions; different rates of feedback; persons’ names; random questionings; the challenging set you would like to understand; our friend intuition.

Thinking is the consideration of different experiences and of inherently separate sets of events, and trying to find out what their relatedness is.

Each one is a star.

How many stars does it take to develop a geometry of out-wardness and in-wardness?

What is the minimum number of stars needed to divide the Universe into out-wardness and in-wardness?

I find it takes a minimum of four; you can’t do it with three. Four very clearly has an out-sideness and an in-sideness. This is what we call the tetrahedron, which has these four stars and six sets of interrelatedness. This comes in very interestingly in mathematics with the generalization that you don’t have to worry too much about the shape, but the four stars are the minimum we can have for a thought. If I can at first discover only three stars in a thought challenge, there must be at least a fourth star lurking somewhere in the critical neighborhood. In fact, I discover that the total number of stars that could possibly be related is always sub-divisible by four.

The mathematics shows this up very clearly as complexes of tetrahedra. Tetrahedron becomes the minimum thinkable set, the minimum re-considerable set, and it turns out to be the fundamental increment out of which all thoughts are constructed.
