Chapter 2. Humans in Universe

We read Bucky to discern the truth in our lives and in the world. As we read Critical Path it is wise to consider applying the material to what you witness in final examination.

For this week we will consider three topics for discussion.

Topic One:

On page 25 of Critical Path Bucky writes, “throughout all earlier times until yesterday, the ruling social powers assumed the human masses to be universally ignorant”

Question: In what ways is this view incorrect?

What are the artifacts that he describes in chapter 2. and who developed them?

Who discovers artifacts and generalized principals? Is it the power structures or is it a gifted, “commoner”?

From where do the discoveries come from?

How about artist-scientists?

What have power structures done with the breakthroughs?

Topic Two:

What is a cipher?

How was cipher discovered?

On page 32 Bucky writes, “The discovery of the symbol for nothing became everything to humanity.”

What does he mean by this?

What is the historical significance?

Topic Three:

On page 43 and 44 Bucky writes about the library of Alexandria.

How many times was the library burned?

Why would power structures want to burn this library?

What would power structures gain from burning this library?

What would they control by doing so?

Can you relate this to anything happening now?

Should the man be power hungry, and one has to be to battle all the way up to head of state, could his now proven knowledge of priests pedophily/homosexuality have been leveraged to gain this position?

Is it a sin to question the integrity of Saints?

Is it a sin not to?

The man is attempting to take the higher moral ground, and really, what else were we expecting? But doing so by belitteling the victims of his armies got me wondering…

I don’t have any answers, I just draw parallels and relationships with the decay of human leadership.

All it takes is for a few good men to remain silent! Treason is betrayal after trust — trust is the church’s main commodity — how does this leave us feeling?

Questioning the legitimacy of the seat — the legitimacy of Sainthood…

If you are worried about a tectonic shift in Vatican, I urge you not to! After all the Church survived the sexual deviancy of the inquisition, the benediction of rape pillage & destruction of whole cultures, a “blind eye” (at best) on Nazi Germany, the condoning of overpopulation and the promotion of AIDS.

Which in turns leads me to a last question:

Did we know the whole time and …accepted it?

What about now?

Using the alleged and often repeated number that the US coal reserves are sufficient to last for 500 years, Professor Bartlet exposes the fallacy of “sustainable growth” and how false and dangerously soothing ideas are propagated in the public.

Taking us back to the 1970′es, he analyses the responses and comments of the time to the energy crisis in order to determine how things could turn when it returns: It becomes rapidly obvious that “the experts”, the media and the politicians have no idea and do not understand the effects of growth.

Growth in the rate of consumption of a non-renewable resource, such as a fossil fuel, causes a dramatic decrease in the life-expectancy of the resource. In a world of growing rates of consumption of resources, it is seriously misleading to state the life-expectancy of a nonrenewable resource “at present rates of consumption,” i.e., with no growth. It is dishonest to promote growth in the rate of consumption of a nonrenewable resource while, at the same time, reassuring people about how long the resource will last “at present rates of consumption.”

The more optimistic the prediction, the greater chance that it is based on faulty arithmetic or no arithmetic at all.

Arithmetic, Population and Energy – 5

Sustainable Growth is a world class oxymoron.

Sustainable Growth is an insult to the intelligence of those that possess this rare quality.

Periodic Meshing In Universe

This Boltzmann’s import-export-import-export; entropy-syntropy entropy syntropy, cosmically complementary, human-heart-like, eternally pulsative, evolutionary regeneration system, also locally manifests itself in the terrestrial biosphere as the ever alternatively, omni-inter-pulsing, barometric highs and lows of the weather.

As an instance of chasm-spanning between science and the humanities by conceptually transformative energy-quanta accounting, synergetics conceptually elucidates the Boltzmann import-export, entropy-syntropy transaction and the elegant manner in which nature accommodates the “hidden ball” play of now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t energy transference.

Pattern Sorting and Observing:

When we are able to observe for long enough periods of time, we find all the gears of Universe eventually meshing, though not simultaneously. The next periodic meshing of any two of the gears might take a thousand years or 28 l/2 years or 17 seconds. The important phenomenon to note is that there are great varieties of periods of non-meshing which altogether make the physically observed totality appear to take up ever more room, and anywhere within this expansiveness the locally predominant events occurring within short spans of time appear to be Omni-disorderly. When we compound that realization with the now-known million-fold greater span of electromagnetic reality and the lesser span of direct-sense ranging of the human organism, we begin to comprehend how readily humanity falls into the trap of dismay, fear, and negativism in general. Impatience engenders further myopically disorderly incrementation of information receipts. Those who are impatient for the receipt of the next news broadcasts are only beguiled by negative information. That is what myopia looks for. Chronic short-sightedness spontaneously seeks and tunes in only the broadcast entropy. Syntropy incasts, in contradistinction to entropic broadcast. Syntropy can be apprehended only through overall or comprehensive review of the totally recalled information of long-term experience.

Man has no experimental data to suggest that energy is ever created or destroyed. Though our own overall experience leads us to the discovery of cyclic events that return upon themselves, the local, momentary, physical events seem to be giving off energy and taking up more room despite our own syntropic attempts to re-establish local order. Entropy is defined as the law of increase of the random element. But our experience in physical exploration also reveals to us that every pattern phenomenon has its complementary which is rarely a mirror-image and is most frequently invisible. As the complementary has the effect of cosmic integrity balancing, we realize there must be unseen syntropic events of Universe that are always reordering the environment. Syntropy (IN Gravity) is the law of elsewhere-importing and always-orderly regrouping of the entropic (OUT Radiation) exportings of all dying systems. Aging and death here engender birth and growth elsewhere

Humans, like the honeybee, are born ignorant, pre-programmed with hunger, thirst, and respiratory drives to take in chemical elements in crystalline (triple bond Solid), liquid (double bond Non-compressible ), and gaseous( single bond compressible) increments, as well as with pro-creativeness and parental protectiveness drives. With their directly programmed drives humans inadvertently produce (what are to them) side effects, which results in their doing the right cosmic regenerative tasks for all the wrong reasons or without any reason at all.

This preliminary phase of preconditioned human re-flexing, while lasting millions of years, is a gestative-phase -behaviour that becomes obsolete as humans’ metaphysical mind discovers the principles of precession and discovers only through vast, cumulative trial and error the pattern experience of both terrestrial and cosmic ecology; where after humans will progressively recommit their endeavours in support of the recycling and orbitally regenerative effects, precessionally inter-produced by all independently orbiting cosmic systems. This abrupt 90-degree reorientation constitutes the evolutionary stage through which humanity is now passing, wherein humanity will progressively exchange its exclusive preoccupation with self- preservation for that of supporting Omni-inclusive, cosmic integrity.

The function of local-Universe information-gathering and local-Universe problem-solving is a generalized problem-and-solution complex, the solution of which is mathematically expressed as the updated Einstein equation(E=Mc2) E = 2Mc2.

Where E is energy, M is mass, and c is the speed of light in a vacuum.

Recognizing that:

1. This information-gathering and problem-solving function of humans on little, local planet Earth is a cosmically generalized function;
2. Our experiencing of the coordinate integrity of nature’s pattern of initiating the growth of myriads of ecologically inter-complementary biological species is scientifically sorted out; and
3. Nature’s method of trial-and-error evolvement of the successive biological types prospering most successfully under each unique evolutionarily progressive environmental change demonstrates that preferred environment technology eliminates survival only of the fittest;

We come to the full realization that the failures of humans on planet Earth to fulfil satisfactorily and faithfully their generalized information-gathering and local problem solving in support of eternal regeneration of Universe simply means death of this particular planetary installation of mind-endowed individuals. The failure of humans means the function must be performed in local-Universe by other phenomena capable of reliably serving the information agglomerating and problem-solving function. The eternal Universe show must go on.

Growth, Development, Evolution

A distinction between growth, development, and evolution.

At this point in our series tearing to pieces the fallacy of sustainable growth, it becomes important to distinguish between growth, development, and evolution. Evolution involves a process of directional (but non-directed) change that leads from states closer to thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium to those further removed from it. As such, it describes a tendency toward states further removed from thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. More simply put, it is “a general way of conceptualizing the self-organizing selection process of the universe displayed in … increasing complexity”. Development really relates more to the world of human affairs, and is part of our socially constructed reality in terms of what we consider to be “desirable” objectives for us or others (and hence allows us to make very subjective and relativistic statements about what and who is developed vs. those that are not). Growth is something that we can measure through definable units of size or scale, and relates to notions of physical size or numerical quantity. It provides a metric that can be applied to many processes of change, but not to those that are qualitative or conditional in nature.

• Growth = an increase in size or quantity.
• Development = an amelioration of conditions or quality.
• Evolution = a tendency toward greater structural complexity and organizational simplicity, more efficient modes of operation, and greater dynamic harmony.

General Evolution Theory (GET)

In recent years, an action-oriented systems approach to the development of human and natural systems has emerged from the study of evolutionary processes in nature and society. It is known as General Evolutionary Systems Theory (or General Evolution Theory (GET), for short). It postulates that the evolutionary trend in the universe constitutes a ‘cosmic process’ specified by a fundamental universal flow toward ever increasing complexity. It is now understood that this dynamic of complexification manifests itself through particular events and sequences of events that are not limited to the domain of biological phenomenon but extend to include all aspects of change in open dynamic systems with a throughput of information and energy. In other words, evolution relates to the formation of stars from atoms, of Homo sapiens from the anthropoid apes, as much as to the formation of complex societies from rudimentary social systems.

Pope Benedict XVI Addresses Decades Long Child Abuse Cover Up, NOT!

A long awaited letter to address the Catholic church cover up of child abuse (yes, sexual abuse, rape, sodomy and the likes) by its priests that began to surface in the early 1970′es in Canada, 1980′es in Australia, 1990′es in Ireland, 2000’s in the US and Germany was released today on The Vatican’s “Holy” Website.

In recent months paedophile scandals have also rocked the Church in the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland… Says the BBC.

The letter was expected to be a confession that states say “clearly and unequivocally” that the church “at the highest levels” has always known about abuse cases; that the church had pursued a “deliberate policy of cover-up, protecting sex offenders in order to avoid scandal, with no regard for the safety of children”… Says Al Jazeera.

The letter acknowledges only the abuse itself, not the decades of Vatican-approved cover-ups & this is a shame – especially in view of the innumerable cases popping up in Germany, Italy, etc…, of late.

It is not so much an apology as a lecture to the …VICTIMS! To me, the loss of Moral Authority of the church is unprecedented and irreparable; it seems that, like anything else labeled “an institution”, from banks, rating agencies, FED & religious organizations to World Health Organization (think H1N1 scandals) of Food Aid Organization rightly deserves your despise, contempt and wariness. In truth, what gives the right to these people to claim to lead us in the first place?

“The Roman Catholic Church has clearly lost sight of its Christian values and it will take more than a pastoral letter to right this wrong.” writes Paul Dunbar in the Christian Science Monitor.

Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) was responsible for a 2001 Vatican edict that instructed bishops to report all cases of child abuse to Vatican authorities in secret and made no mention of reporting crimes to the police…

Were we really expecting a “mea culpa”?

Cooperatores Veritatis, Co-workers of the Truth was the motto of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, he has wisely chosen not to carry over that burden to his pappal duties.

But he has also chosen not to use the three golden crowns found on the tiara, the first a symbol of the Church’s sovereignty over the States, the second to show that his spiritual authority was superior to any civic authority, and the third to symbolize the Pope’s moral authority over all secular monarchs… we applaud that choice.

In the conclusion of GRUNCH Of Giants, R. Buckminster Fuller lists The Seven Conditions For Humanity To Change Its Destiny, and obviously tells us to shed religions and gain a direct “hot-line” with God:

7. the individual discovery of God by a vast majority of human individuals – not the discovery of religions, but the discovery that each and every individual has an always-instantly-open, no-intermediary-switchboard-authority-to-contend-with, no-interference of-any-kind, direct “hot-line to God”: i.e., the weightless, nonphysical communication occurring teleologically between the differentially limited, weightless, nonphysical, temporal, special-case mind of the individual human and the comprehensively integrated, macro-micro unlimited, weightless, eternal, generalized mind of God.

Really!? Arithmetic doesn’t hold at the local level and is dependent on the beliefs of “some” politician.

Let us review what we learned in part three:

Growth control is very controversial. The problem is that controlled growth just means growth!

Bacteria In A Bottle:

Characteristics of steady growth in a finite environment. A case of ordinary steady growth.

One bacteria divides to become two; the two divide to become four, the four become eight, then 16, 32, etc…

Suppose we have bacteria that double in this way every minute.

At 11:00am there is one bacterium in a bottle.

At 12 noon the bottle is full.

We have a finite environment of one bottle, and a doubling time of one minute.

At what time was the bottle half full?

At what time did the bacteria realize they were running out of space?

… 5 minutes before 12 noon, only 3% of the space in the bottle is occupied and 97% is just yearning for development; at that time, how many of you would be conscious that there is a disastrous problem coming right at us in the next 5 minutes?

Suppose that at 11:58 (2 minutes before disaster), some bacteria realize there is a problem and send out search parties for additional space… and by a stroke of impossible luck, they find 3 more bottles.

How long will these four bottles be able to sustain the rate of growth? (how much time, the collossal dscovery of 3 times more resources than previously available in history bought to the bacteria community? At what time are all 4 bottles full and disaster strikes?)

This type of steady growth is the centerpiece of the entire national and global economy. Think about it!

People write books and conduct seminars promoting the restoration of “sustainable growth” to save the world! How more moronic than that could that be?

Economists and politicians would have us believe that we can continue to steadily increase our consumption of fossil fuels, we will always be able to find more resources to fuel that growth. Let’s remember that the only thing that a politician ever learns after entering office, is the exercise of power!

There is a belief that if you throw enough money at holes in the ground, oil is sure to come out! As half of the oil ever discovered has been consumed, i/e the remaining reserve is equal to the total of all that has been used in all of history: it is therefore one minute before 12! How likely are we going to now suddenly find more oil than has ever been discovered before?

Penny Yu Ping Kidney Failure - Go Home And Die!

Yes, we are asking for money, right here and right now!

Can you help this girl?

This is about Penny (Yu Ping), a nice young Chinese girl who is just looking for a chance to lead a normal life. She is only 24 years old. She was born into a very poor family from the countryside in Henan. After she was only 1 month old she was given away by her parents. They didn’t want her. Since then she lived with her grandparents who are also very poor. Penny has seldom seen or had contact with her parents since then.

Some time ago Penny came to Ningbo hoping to find work, which she did. Just some small jobs here and there, but enough to pay her rent and eat.

Some months ago she became our babysitter and looked after our 2 kids for a few hours each day. My 3 year old boy and my 2 year old girl love her very much, and she loves them. She is the best baby sitter we ever had. Before she started working in our home, we asked her if she had any health problems. She said she was taking medication for slightly high blood pressure. This was because her kidneys were weak. Apart from that she appeared fit and healthy.

About a week ago, she took ill with a cold, a throat infection, and vomiting. After going to the hospital, she called us to say she could not continue to come and look after our kids and that she had already bought a train ticket to return to her home town in Henan. She asked if she could come to pick up her salary the next day. I found it a bit strange that she would go back home since she had told me many times she has no friends or family there who care much about her.

When she came to pick up her salary, I asked her a few questions about the situation. She broke down in tears and started to tell me the following . . .

When she had gone to the hospital the doctors discovered she had stage 5 (the most severe) chronic kidney failure. She was given 3 choices.
1 – Find a kidney donor and have a transplant.
2 – Go on an immediate rigourous course of kidney dialysis.
3 – Refuse treatment and die within 3 to 6 months.

With the first 2 options being EXTREMELY expensive, and her having virtually no money, she accepted that she was going back home to die. Having admitted to me that there was no one at all back home who could help her with this situation I managed to persuade her to stay here in Ningbo and let my wife and myself help her whichever way we could. We don’t have much money ourselves but we couldn’t sit back and let this happen to this girl. She is a lovely person. Very honest and hard working. Already we have many promises of help from our friends but it is going to take quite a lot of money to pay for this treatment, and we are going to have to raise it in any way we can. She needs dialysis several times a week and it costs 500 yuan each time.

She will have to have the kidney dialysis for the rest of her life. As you probably know, this will be very costly, and, quite simply, she just does not have the money.

It is almost impossible to say how much money she will need in total. At the moment she, and we are just taking things as they come, day by day. The hope is that she will have an operation which will allow her to have dialysis at home. This also requires a special machine to be bought. The cost of the fluid bags for treatment is also very high. A very conservative estimate for the cost of just the first year of treatment alone would be around 250,000 RMB. This does not take into account the possibility of infection, which would involve more hospital stays and treatment.

This poor girl needs help and she needs it NOW!

她只有以下三种选择：

2. 立刻做肾透析治疗
3. 拒绝治疗，3-6个月之内结束年轻的生命。

由于前两种方案非常昂贵，而且她几乎没有什么钱，她选择了回河南老家等待生命的结束。在她承认了河南老家根本没有任何人可以帮她解决这个问题后，我设法说服了她让她留在宁波，让我和我的夫人尽我们的能力以我们的方式来帮助她。我们并不富裕，但我们不能置之不理，让这个善良的女孩遭受这种惨遇。虽然我们的很多朋友已经承诺给予帮助，但这个治疗将需要大量的资金，我们将尽自己的能力，使用任何方式筹到资金。她每周需要做几次透析，每次花费500元。

Humans In Universe Water

In Chapter One of Critical Path: Speculative Prehistory Of Humanity, Buckminster Fuller states that because water is essential to all the biological organisms’ ecological systems of regeneration on our planet, the following 4 major facts about water are vitally important: (Please note that number two has been disproved since the book was written)

1. Vital fact number one: Biological life is 50% water. Earthians are hydraulically designed technologies. Their structure consists of a balance interaction between tensive & compressive forces.
2. Vital fact number two: We do not know of any water in Universe other than that on our planet Earth. Even though that fact number two has been disproved since: we now know there is abundant water in Universe – Water in the Solar System – Water in the Universe - Water in Universe – Water in the Universe: Abundant? – it doesn’t really change Bucky Fuller’s observation that the as abundant as it seems on Earth, with the oceans, etc…, on a 12 inches diameter Earth globe, the ocean’s average depth would be smaller than the thickness of the ink used to print them!
3. Vital fact number three: water freezes and boils within close limits – Anywhere in Universe, except inside Earth’s biosphere the water would be either frozen, boiling, evaporated, or incandescent. Our terrestrial biosphere is a unique environment essential to the survival of humans.
4. Vital fact number four: water gains and loses heat more slowly than any known abundant substance. The world ocean’s thermal stability keeps the world’s temperature changes at minimum; they act as a flywheel does to steady rotational speed on a mechanical device.

The importance of water underlined in the first pages of Critical Path will be revisited several times along the pages of the book; Bucky Fuller putting a special emphasis on the influence of water on Human settlements, the development of the Human mind and the birth of Human power structures.

We saw that in 1986, the world population reached 5 billion people and was growing at the rate of 1.7% per year. The doubling time is 70 / 1.7 = 41 years; That means that at this “modest” rate the world population doubles every 41 years. In 1999, the world population reached 6 billion and we can calculate that the rate of growth has decreased to 1.3% per year… In spite of this reduction, the world population is still growing by over 80,000,000 people every year.

Should this reduced 1.3% population growth rate continue, the world population density would reach one person per square meter of dry land in approximately 780 years!

The lesson is that

ZERO POPULATION GROWTH IS GOING TO HAPPEN!

We can debate whether we like zero population growth or don’t like it, it is going to happen; whether we debate it or not, whether we like it or not, it is absolutely certain that people could not live with that sort of density on the dry land surface of the earth.

therefore, today’s high birth rates will drop & today’s low death rates will rise… till we have exactly the same numbers and zero growth. That will happen in a relatively shorter time compared to 780 years!

What sort of options are available if we wanted to address the problem?

As you can see, the options that make the problem worse are “as sacred as motherhood” and devoted to the humane goal of lowering the death rate, whereas the ones that solve the problem are generally considered distasteful and not considered…

However, zero population growth is inevitable and is going to happen! It is obvious that Nature is goint to choose from the right hand list and we don’t have to do anything… Except be prepared to “live” with whichever option nature choses to solve the problem.

Or we can exercise the one option that is open to us: that option is to choose first from the right hand list.l We have to find something that we can go out and campaign for…

Here is the human dilemna for its future; everything we regard as good makes the problem worse; and everything we regard as bad, helps solve the problem.

Education so far is also making the problem worse as it has not reduced the ignorance of the problem.

Nature is already choosing from the right hand column: we’ve all heard of the ravages of the AIDS epidemic in Africa…

At a 6% rate of growth as in the 70′es & 80′es, Boulder, Colorado, will, in 70 years, be larger than Los Angeles. It is obvious that Boulder valley cannot accomodate the population of Los Angeles; therefore Boulder population growth is going to stop. the only question is: Will we be able to stop it before it is wall to wall to wall and we are all choking to death?

The answer is we probably won’t! Boulder elected officials, as most other elected officials and the rest of the population have no idea and do not comprehend what is going on:

A 1960′es brochure promoting Boulder, reported that “Doubling its population in 10 years, Boulder… is indeed a stable and prosperous community.”

WHAT!?

A doubling of the population in 10 years is stable?

This is indeed an idiotic statement! They don’t even understand the meaning of the words they put down on paper!

But, isn’t a bigger city a better city? The beauty of population problems is that their consequences are already visible around us. Someone that is today 10 years old, will be 60 years old in 50 years; there is no changing that, it is ineluctable and “predictable” – one of those instances where the future is already there – For the price of an airplane ticket, one can easily see what Boulder will be like by going over to Los Angeles.

Sustainable Growth is a world class oxymoron.

Sustainable Growth is an insult to the intelligence of those that possess this rare quality.

An impossible theorem.
